Asking prices are not completed-sale prices
A listing price is the seller's target. Some watches sell near asking, some require negotiation, and some remain listed for long periods.
A dealer is buying inventory, not retailing your watch for you
An outright buyer typically assumes authentication, condition, market, shipping, payment and resale risk. The spread between acquisition and resale is what supports those costs and the dealer's margin.
Compare net proceeds, not headline prices
When comparing options, account for marketplace fees, payment processing, insured shipping, returns, fraud exposure, taxes where applicable, and the time required to find a buyer.
When consignment may make sense
If maximizing potential proceeds matters more than speed, a well-structured consignment arrangement may be worth considering. Terms, insurance, payout timing and fees should be clear in writing.
When an outright sale may make sense
If certainty and speed matter most, a direct sale can remove much of the effort and transaction risk associated with retailing the watch yourself.
