What is a direct watch sale?
In a direct sale, a dealer or buyer purchases the watch from you after agreeing on terms and completing inspection. It is typically the faster and more predictable option, but the buyer must account for resale risk, overhead, transaction costs and margin.
What is luxury watch consignment?
With consignment, you retain ownership until the watch is sold under the agreed terms. The consignee markets the watch to potential buyers and receives an agreed fee or spread when a sale closes.
When direct sale can make sense
Direct sale can fit owners who prioritize speed, simplicity and certainty, or who do not want to wait for an end buyer. The key is comparing a real executable offer rather than a retail asking price.
When consignment can make sense
Consignment may fit rare, expensive or collector-focused watches where broader exposure can matter. The tradeoff is time: there is no guarantee that an end buyer will appear immediately at the target price.
Questions to ask before consigning
Understand the agreed price or net amount, commission, minimum term, insurance, custody, marketing, price-change approval, buyer return period, payment timing and what happens if the watch does not sell.
Compare the net result, not the headline price
A higher advertised price does not automatically mean a higher net result. Compare commissions, payment fees, shipping, insurance, taxes where applicable, return risk and time-to-sale.
Seller note
Every watch is evaluated individually. Reference, condition, originality, completeness and current demand can materially change the result.
